Christmas Day 2006
by @ 11:45 pm.

Merry Christmas everyone!

We’ve had a great day, and I hope everyone else has as well.

We actually slept late this morning. Mira has been a little sick lately, she’s got a bad cold. Xander knocked on our door this morning around 7:30am. We got up to check on Mira then also, and she was still asleep. We asked Xander if he would be willing to let her sleep as long as she could, since she was sick. He cheerfully agreed. Kate and I were very impressed. We decided he wins the Christmas Spirit award for the day.

Mira woke up around 9am. We headed downstairs and enjoyed a morning of opening presents together. I think it’s more fun watching them opening presents than it is getting them myself. I guess that comes with age and parenthood. In any case, they were very happy with the presents they got this year. And they loved watching Kate and me open ours from them as well.
We had sausage biscuits for breakfast this year. In the past we’ve always done ham biscuits, but we just decided that we’d rather have the sausage in the morning, so we’ve officially amended that tradition, at least for now. Who knows what we’ll be in the mood for next year.

One of the highlights of the day was using the new webcam that Uncle David got us to talk with Kate’s parents and sister in Omaha. It was a treat to be able to see them and for them to be able to see us on Christmas Day. I’m going to have to get my whole family set up with one. We used Skype to do the link up, and for the most part, it worked beautifully. And one of the best parts is that it doesn’t cost anything for Skype to Skype communication. I’d heard of Skype in the past, but never really been interested in it. I’m converted now.

We all had a great day and the kids went to bed mostly happy. Mira was running a little ragged bay the end of the day because of her cold, but she’d had a good day despite a rough time going to bed. Xander was elated with his day. Kate and I enjoyed ourselves too and I hope everyone else had a wonderful Christmas like we did.

Christmas Eve 2006
by @ 12:13 am.

We had a nice Christmas Eve. We had a nice day just being together and playing.

Xander and Mira were excited all day about getting to go out for our traditional sushi dinner on Christmas Eve. We had a great meal and the kids did a great job there.

Then we went out and looked at Christmas lights. There was some really beautiful stuff out there this year.

After we got back home the kids got to open their Christmas Eve present. They played with those for a few minutes and then we watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas before sending them off to bed.

Kate and I spent from around 8pm to midnight getting all the final work done for Christmas morning, but it will be worth it. We’re looking forward to tomorrow morning.

Let the Vacation Begin!
by @ 1:37 pm.

They sent us home early from work today. So that means my vacation has officially started. It’s been a long hard month at work. My boss has been out of the country for the last 4 weeks, so I’ve been doing a lot of his job while he has been out. On top of that, I became the head of a major new project this month as well. That’s all in addition to my normal work. So I’m very glad to finally be on my end of year break. I’m taking off till the kids go back to school on January 2nd. It’ll be nice to be able to take some time for myself without having to worry about what is going on at work for a little while.

Christmas Shopping and Decorating
by @ 11:02 pm.

We were finally all well at the same time this weekend so we could get some shopping and decorating done.

I took Xander out on Saturday to shop for Mira and Kate. On Sunday I took Mira out to shop for Xander and Kate. I had a great time with both of them. One of the things Kate and I have decided on lately, is that we both need more personal time with the kids individually. We want both of them to have time with us alone so that they feel a connection between each of us.

Anyway, this afternoon we gave the kids their latest surprise. Kate found one of those 6′ tall inflatable snow globes on sale, so we got them one. We set it out in the front yard today and the kids love it. We also put some lights up on the bushes outside the house as well.

Inside, we finally got the tree put up. The kids are old enough to enjoy helping with the process of bulding the tree now, so it was a lot of fun. Kate and I (mostly Kate) got the lights on it before we went up to bed. We’ll start working on ornaments tonight. We’ve decided to go light on the ornaments this year, since we are getting it up so late.

Kate and I keep looking at the prelit trees, but keep deciding against it. None of them really look as good as the 9′ tall tree that we have now. It really is beautiful, and looks better every year, as we keep getting better at putting it together.

So, even though it’s been in the 70s outside, it’s starting to look more like Christmas around our house.

Holiday Programs
by @ 9:45 pm.

Last night and tonight were the kids’ holiday programs at school.

Xander’s was last night and Mira’s was tonight.  They have it divided up over three nights because the school has so many kids now.  It was be tough to fit everyone there at the same time.

Both performances were wonderful.  We enjoyed them very much and the kids had a wonderful time doing them.

Kate’s Presents
by @ 9:38 pm.

Here is what the kids came up with for Kate:

Since she likes watching Dancing with the Stars they got her one disco ball Christmas tree ornament.

Since she likes coffee they got her a gift card to Caribou Coffee.

Lastly they picked out a nice sweater for her.  That was the only present that I helped guide them toward.  It was to replace another idea they had (which I’ll keep secret for now) that we weren’t able to find.

Kate loved all the presents and I was very proud of them for being able to think of things to give her.

Spelling Words
by @ 7:12 pm.

Xander had 14 words on his spelling test this week. Among them were “invisible” and “responsible”.

He only missed one today, and it wasn’t either of those.

Birthday Presents
by @ 3:12 pm.

So today I was talking with the kids about what they would like to get Kate for her birthday.  I was telling them to think about things that they know Mommy likes and that might give us ideas.  I mentioned that she likes different kinds of soap, but that she had plenty of that right now, so that was just an example.

They though about it for a few minutes and Mira says, “Mommy likes iced tea!  We could get her some iced tea!”

I love my kids.  Tune in later in the week for what they came up with.
